Today, we are inundated with tips and tricks on improving our search engine ranking and as business owners relying on a solid online presence, it’s often hard to know where to start. Working with small, medium, and large businesses I see some basic SEO actions that always seem to be overlooked or ignored.

These basic actions can be done by anyone and can be done today with little hassle. All you need is;

  • a few hours,
  • a solid understanding of your business offering,
  • and some images that reflect your business.

Webpage titles and descriptions

What are titles and descriptions and why are they important for SEO?

Above is a screenshot of a Google result. It shows our page title in blue and our page description underneath. This information is pulled by Google directly from the website. It is the piece of information that tells Google what the purpose of the page is. With this information, Google can tell whether or not the page is relevant to the person searching.

It is vital that our page titles and descriptions are written in a way that perfectly reflects the purpose of the page and includes keywords that help Google understand who to display the page result to.

In the case above, the Google search was “Insurance Law in New Zealand”. You can see that this keyword is in both the title and description which tells Google that this is a relevant result to show the searcher.

What steps do you need to take to complete you page titles and descriptions?

  1. Find out where you can edit them in your Content Management System (CMS) e.g. Wix, Squarespace, WordPress
  2. Write titles and descriptions for each page on your website including keywords and relevant content
  3. Publish the content and track your search engine results using a tool like SEMrush

Image optimization

These days images are just as important for SEO as written content. Google and other search engines will crawl your images for important information relating to your keywords and performance.

Adding Alt descriptions to your images as well as compressing them to improve or maintain your website’s speed and performance is vital to your website’s search engine ranking. Especially if you are an image-heavy website.

What steps do you need to take to optimize your images?

  1. Compress all images prior to adding them to your site using a free tool like TinyPNG.
  2. Add Alt descriptions to each image and ensure they include keywords and an accurate representation of what the image is trying to achieve.

For example, if I were to add an image to go with this blog post, the Alt description might read “Tips and tricks for understanding SEO better”.

Custom 404 page

We’ve all seen the 404-page error. This tends to happen when a URL is misspelled. It’s important that you guide the user to what they were trying to find. To do this you need to include some basic information on the page. Every CMS will allow you to do this. Below is a custom 404-page that we created for Willow Lane Events.

Try to include your page links and an opportunity for your user to contact you.

Internal linking

You’ll notice throughout this blog post that I have linked some words to different parts of our website. This lets Google and other search engines know that our content is relevant and connected. Just by simply highlighting a word and linking it to a web page through your CMS you can improve your search engine ranking. Just make sure the link relates to the page you are linking to.

You can also link to an external website. If you do this, ask the website owner of the website you are linking to, to reciprocate by adding a link of yours to their website. This type of reciprocal backlinking is great for SEO. More on that in our backlinking blog post.

Social sharing images

Adding social sharing images to web pages is something that is often overlooked. Not only can it help your SEO but it can entice people to click on your webpage link on social media.

What do I mean by social sharing images? You may have noticed when you share a link to a website on social media, a snippet of text appears with an image to go with it. That image is specific to the link and will only appear if you add social sharing images to your web pages. See an example below:

As always, optimize the image with an Alt description and by compressing the image. Then use your CMS to add a social sharing image to each page on your website. This makes social sharing a lot more attractive and will let Google know that you are active on social media.
